Broadway Brook F.C 4-4 Urmston Meadowside

After beating Pelican 3-2 the previous week, this week was the local derby as Broadway Brook played host to Urmston Meadowside, in what was to be a very feisty and entertaining game.

Broadway line up.

Antony Platt in goal. Richard Smith making his debut at right back, Andy McIntosh left back with Steven Dimitch and Jonathan Eckersley centre backs

Kyle Denton on the right, Dan Mitchell on the left with Elliott Speight and John GIlmartin in the centre of midfield.

Richard Whitfield partnered Gary Rowbotham upfront.

On a terrible pitch, Broadway started off at a blistering pace, controlling most of the play but had to be wary of a Meds counter attack.

It was Broadway who broke the deadlock as Elliott Speight plays a perfect through ball to Rowbotham who fires across the Meds keeper into the far corner. Good finish 1-0

1-0 was soon to be 2-0, only if we had a video camera for the next goal as it was a calamity for the Meds keeper, as Whitfield receives a pass from McIntosh 25 yards out, who fires a tame left footed shot towards goal, what looked like a routine save, was anything but as the ball trickled through the keepers hands into the corner. 2-0 doesn’t matter how the go in, they all count. 2-0 to Broadway

Meds pulled a goal back as the lively Luke Kaylor was left unmarked inside the Broadway half as he received a quality pass; he raced into the box and finished well. 2-1

Meds were later awarded a penalty after a careless foul in the box. Antony Platt pulls off a great penalty save, the rebound falls to the Meds striker who’s shot heads for the top corner, as Platt flies and tips over the bar, Unbelievable double save!

Broadway’s lead didn’t last much longer as Meds scored 2 quick fire goals to go 3-2 up before the break. Totally undeserved.

Half time 3-2 to Urmston Meadowside.

The seconds half was dominated by Broadway as they looked to press for the equaliser.

Richard Whitfield going very close as his sweetly struck effort whistled past the post, and Steven Dimitch’s long range effort forcing the Meds keeper into a good save.

Broadway’s dominance pays off as Dan Mitchell is taken out 25 yards from the Meds goal.

Rowbotham steps up and fires a rocket into the top left hand corner of the Meds goal, keeper no chance. 2nd free kick in a week and his 14th of the season. 3-3

Broadway sub. Marek Adamiuk replaces Richard Whitfield.

Despite Broadway’s dominance in the 2nd half, Meds regained the lead as an unmarked player heads in a cross. 4-3

Broadway come close to drawing level again, as Marek Adamiuk plays a ball over the top for Dan Mitchell, who lobs the Meds keeper only for a defender to clear off the line.

Broadway finally did draw level, as a corner is swung in, which is met by Steven Dimitch who hits the post. The rebound falls to Jonathan Eckersley who kung fu kicks the ball into the roof of the net! Fine strike for the centre back! 4-4

As the game draws to a close, with the final kick of the game, Broadway could have snatched victory as Dan Mitchell races towards the Meds area and lays the ball off for Marek to strike over the keeper only for his effort to rebound off the bar! Unlucky!

Final score 4-4. Excellent entertainment for the neutral.

Man of the match was awarded to Elliott Speight as he battled against some very good midfielders today and came out on top. Excellent performance from Captain Marvel.
